Nature Strikes Back
THE ANNEXE
Artist and Writer Retreat

The Annexe is a self contained studio space for people needing to creatively (or otherwise) retreat. It is located in the southern English countryside and is set in a tree-filled garden. It is safe, comfortable and peaceful.

Information and pictures below. Feel free to get in touch with any questions.

Contact can be made directly by EMAIL   o r via AIRBNB   (The AirBnb calendar is not necessarily accurate so it's worth checking directly. Direct bookings are also slightly less than the  AirBnb listed price of £85 per night.)

The Space
The Annexe is a ground floor, mini-house adjacent to the main house. It has one working/living room with a kitchenette, an adjoining bedroom and a shower room. It is a lovely space architecturally, with lots of natural light and great acoustics. The cooking facilities consist of a 2-ring electric hob and an electric slow cooker. However, if you need an oven or a microwave you are very welcome to use the kitchen in the main house. There is a king-size bed so the Annexe can comfortably accommodate two.

Reasonable requests relating to the utility of the space can be arranged in advance. At present it is set up as a living space with a sofa, a small table and 2 chairs but these can easily be substituted for a wide, high, work table and stool and/or a writing desk and chair.

Annexe guests can also use the library in the main house.

There is a private garden for the exclusive use of Annexe guests which includes a summer house. The summer house facilities are limited (and it also contains a few ladders and tools), but there is electricity and a single bed. It is a wonderful alternative sleeping space in the summer, but if you don't mind the cold (and with lots of bedding), you can sleep out there in winter as well.

The grounds also include a small sculpture garden which is another calm and pleasant thinking space.
Location
The village of Crowhurst is close to the historic towns of Hastings and Battle and is very easy to access. There is a train station (90 mins direct to/from London) just a few minutes’ walk from the house and very clear road routes via Battle if you drive.

It is a very rural environment and there are woodlands and fields within close walking distance. If you want to explore the wider area the train takes 3 minutes to Battle and the historic Abbey, and 10 minutes to Hastings - a lively and attractive seaside town with a growing arts scene, good eating and drinking places and interesting historical features. I can advise on cultural, culinary, botanical and historical activities.

Interaction with guests
There are two of us living in the main house. We both work from home but the generous space means that you won’t really be aware of us. The primary purpose of the Annexe is to retreat so your privacy is paramount. We are there if you need us but If you don’t want to interact beyond arranging library (or kitchen) time that’s absolutely fine.

Other things to note
There isn't a shop in the village so reasonable requests relating to food supplies prior to your arrival can also be considered and you are welome to accompany us on the weekly shop. There is a small leisure facility nearby with a gym,  pool and sauna which we go to several times a week. If you would like to use these facilities we can take you in as a guest at a day rate of £5.

Here are some photos although it's not really possible to capture the feel of the space in a photo. The black smudge in some pics is because I dropped my phone and damaged the lens. More photos when I get a new phone!
