Nature Strikes Back
Artist and Writer Retreat

The Annexe is a self contained studio space for people needing to creatively (or otherwise) retreat. It is located in the southern English countryside and is set in a tree-filled garden. It is safe, comfortable and peaceful.
Please read the information below and get in touch with any questions or if you would like to reserve.

Contact can be made directly by EMAIL   o r via AIRBNB.   (Dates listed on the AirBnb calendar are not necessarily accurate so it's worth checking directly)

The Space
The Annexe is a ground floor mini-house adjacent to the main house. It has one working/living room with a kitchenette, an adjoining bedroom and a shower room. It is lovely space architecturally with lots of natural light and great acoustics. The cooking facilities consist of a 2-ring electric hob and an electric slow cooker. However, if you need an oven or a microwave you are very welcome to use the kitchen in the main house. (In season you can also help yourself to vegetables from the greenhouse or garden).

There is a king-size bed so the Annexe can easily and comfortably accommodate two.

There is a private section of the garden for the exclusive use of Annexe guests. This part of the garden includes a summer house. The facilities in the summer house are limited (and you have to share it with ladders and tools) but there is electricity, plenty of space and a single bed if you want to spend a night (almost) out in the garden. If you don't mind the cold, it's possible to sleep out there in winter too.

Guests also have access to the library in the main house. It is mostly English language but contains a lot of translated fiction, international art, philosophy, politics and reference books. If you have a specific interest let me know and I can advise if there is relevant material available.

The grounds also include a small sculpture garden which is another calm and pleasant place to spend time.
The village of Crowhurst is close to the historic towns of Hastings and Battle and is very easy to access. There is a train station (90 mins direct to/from London) just a few minutes’ walk from the house and very clear road routes via Battle if you drive.

It is a very rural environment and there are woodlands and fields within close walking distance. The predominant sounds are birds and sheep. If you want to explore the wider area the train takes 3 minutes to Battle and the historic Abbey, and 10 minutes to Hastings - a lively and attractive seaside town with a growing arts scene, good eating and drinking places and interesting historical features. I can make cultural, culinary, botanical and historical recommendations.

Interaction with guests
There are two of us living in the main house. We both work from home but the generous space means that you won’t really be aware of us. The primary purpose of the Annexe is to retreat so your privacy is paramount. We are there if you need us but If you don’t want to interact beyond arranging library (or kitchen) time that’s absolutely fine.

Other things to note
Reasonable requests relating to the creative utility of the space can be arranged in advance. At present the living/working space has a wide, high table and stool but a writing desk / chair can be set up and other equipment provided where possible.  There isn't a shop in the village so requests relating to initial food supplies prior to your arrival will also be considered.

Here are a few photos but it's not really possible to capture the feel of the space in a photo. The black smudge in some pics is because I dropped my phone and damaged the lens. New photos when I get a new phone!
